Councillors
The Council at the Shire of Kojonup consists of 8 Councillors who are elected to their position via a public vote bi-annually. Councillors elected serve a term of four years with four Council positions coming up for election at every bi-annual election. Generally Council Elections for the Shire of Kojonup are held in October.
Becoming a Councillor is not only your opportunity to do this but it opens you up to a wealth of learning and its a great way to meet people from many walks of life. Find out more as the election approaches - approximately 3-4 months before an election the Shire will make information available to the public.
In consideration of becomming a Councillor, pleae be aware that once elected compulsory training must be undertaken. The Council Member Essentials course has five foundational units. All council members will be required to complete:
- Understanding local government
- Serving on council
- Meeting procedures
- Conflicts of interest
- Understanding of financial reports and budgets
All council members will have to complete the Council Member Essentials course unless, in the previous five years, they have passed the Diploma of Local Government 52756WA (Elected Member) or the course titled LGASS00002 Elected Member Skill Set. Councillors generally attend 2 x Briefing Sessions and an Ordinary Council Meeting per month. Councillors also represent the Shire on various committees both internal and for external organisations.
